Dragon Ball: Ultimate Butouden, or Dragon Ball Kai: Ultimate Butouden as it seems to be called in Japan, seems to be slated for Japanese release date of February 3, 2011 according to a Japanese blog. That same blog says it will be an action/fighting game for the Nintendo DS. As you may remember, Namco Bandai Games has a Dragon Ball 3DS title in the works for the Nintendo 3DS. The Nintendo 3DS releases February 26, 2011 in Japan, so to have a regular DS title out a couple of weeks before is very surprising. The blog says they received this information from a magazine (probably Shonen Jump or V-Jump) so we hope to have more information on this as soon as it becomes available.

Dragon Ball Kai: Ultimate Butouden to Cover All Major DBZ Sagas


Namco Bandai Games has just launched the official Dragon Ball Kai: Ultimate Butouden web site. As as you can see below or at the official website, the splash image shows Vegeta, Frieza, Cell, and Babidi. We initially thought the game was going to go to the Cell saga, since that’s what the Shonen Jump scan featured, but it looks like all of the major sagas from Dragon Ball Z – Saiyan Saga, Frieza Saga, Cell Saga, and Buu Saga – will be making it to the game. Of course like most official video game websites, there is limited content at the moment, but as the launch date we’re sure more official information will populate the website.
Anyways, Dragon Ball Kai: Ultimate Butouden is going to harness the power of the built-in Nintendo DS microphone to allow players to launch special attacks. So, for example, if your playing as Goku and you yell “Kamehameha,” Goku will launch the trademark attack at the enemy.
But what if your in school or the doctor’s office and don’t want to look like an idiot yelling random Japanese words? No problem! Players can also use the traditional button-mashing inputs or tap the bottom DS screen to launch special attacks.

As you may know, in order to launch special attacks in Dragon Ball games, you need enough “ki” or energy to do so. The bottom screen for Dragon Ball Kai: Ultimate Butouden will also have options to let players increase or decrease ki levels. Depending on the level, players ki gauge will be depleted in different quantities when special attacks are performed. We assume there will be some kind of trade-off to having a higher ki level vs a lower key since players are getting to chose this.
The last piece of new news is there will be automatic blocking. The official site confirms that when players aren’t pressing anything, characters will automatically block weak attacks. And if players are moving toward the opponent, energy beam attacks will be automatically blocked.

Also a new Dragon Ball Kai: Ultimate Butouden game play video is out! The gameplay looks fast-paced, but the graphics look like they are from the SNES. It does seem like the game will be an interesting fighter.

Namco Bandai Games Japan has revealed King Kai, one of Goku’s trusted teachers and mentors, will be playable in a Dragon Ball game for the first time ever! That’s right, the goofy, but wise blue master will be in Dragon Ball Kai: Ultimate Butouden for the Nintendo DS! He’s appeared as part of the story or as a boss in Dragon Ball Z: Super Saiya Densetsu (SNES), Dragon Ball Z: The Legacy of Goku (GBA), Dragon Ball Z: Buu’s Fury (GBA), but has never been playable until now! As you can see below, he throws wood, drives you over with a car, and blasts you with magic telephone voodoo! Seems like a blue Hercule, don’t you think?
