Originally released for the MEGA CD™ system in 1993 and with Metal Sonic and Amy Rose making their introduction, Sonic CD is coming to digital platforms with music from the original Japanese soundtrack. The beloved prequel to Sonic The Hedgehog 4 ™ Episode I is coming to iPhone® and iPod® touch, iPad®, Xbox LIVE® Arcade for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PlayStation® Network, PC Digital Download, Android and Windows Phone 7 and will be available for download this winter.

Following the classic story of the original, Sonic CD sees Dr Eggman plan to cause chaos and take control of the future by stealing Times Stones from the Little Planet. Sonic must speed through levels and travel through time whilst fending off Eggman’s robots to recover the Time Stones, and save Amy Rose from his mechanical twin, Metal Sonic! This fast-paced game will return with brand new features including enhanced widescreen graphics, iOS features, Xbox LIVE Achievements, PSN Trophies, PC Achievements and more.

Sonic CD war schon immer eines meiner Lieblings Retro Titeln - besonders wegen Metal Sonic.
Ich hoffe, dass in diesem "Remake" auch die Bugs und Glitches ausgemerzt werden, denn es gab schon ein paar Glitches, wo ich mich einfach tierisch aufgeregt habe.
Allerdings habe ich gehört, dass Sonic CD in den Konsolen Varianten auf 30 fps und auf dem Iphone mit 60 fps laufen soll. Ich HOFFE das ist nicht SEGA´s Ernst! Sind IPhones schon die Next Gen Konsolen oder was?
Ich werde mir aber - sobald ich ein Gamertag habe, mir Sonic CD nochmal für XBL holen, definitiv.

Ich bin zumindest ziemlich erfreut über die Tatsache, dass Sonic CD den japanischen Soundtrack enthalten wird.

Natürlich hätte man die ganze Sache auch Regionsabhängig machen können, aber in diesem Punkt bin ich positiv von SEGA überrascht. Auch wird es wohl eine eigenständige Release sein und nicht als Vintage Collection erscheinen, wie es zum Beispiel bei Sonic the Hedgehog, 2, 3, & Knuckles der Fall war. Und scheinbar hat SEGA es endlich mal geschafft, einem Spiel ein ordentliches 16:9 Format entlocken zu können. Es wurde nichts gestreckt oder abgeschnitten, was mir die Freude auf diesen Titel wirklich versüßt.

Sonic CD fungiert an dieser Stelle wohl eher als Einleitung für die zweite Episode von Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II, wo bekanntlich Metal Sonic seinen Auftritt haben wird. Übrigens, das Game ist nun doch auf der PAX spielbar. Dann können wir bald mit weiterem Material rechnen und uns ein Bild von der Re-Release machen.

Die Wii-Besitzer sollten sich gewundert haben, als bei den gelisteten Plattformen die Nintendo Konsole nicht vermerkt war. Nun wurde der Grund zu der ganzen Sache endlich aufgeklärt:

In an excuse that carries a whiff of that old “the SNES doesn’t have the technology to render blood” chestnut, Sega has explained that the WiiWare platform lacks the chops necessary to replicate the CD-quality sound of the technologically-mindblowing-circa-1993 original – so, no Sonic CD for Wii owners.

Zusammenfassung: Die CD Soundqualität würde die 40MB File Grenze überspringen, weswegen eine Release auf dieser Plattform nicht in Frage kommt. Alternativ könnt ihr aber das Game via Sonic Gems Collection (GameCube) zocken


Christian Whitehead (aka "The Taxman") hat im Sonic Retro Board angekündigt, man könne in Sonic CD zwischen dem Super Peel Out oder dem Sonic 2 Spin Dash wechseln.

Außerdem gibt es ein kleines Interview, welches von einem Sonic Stadium / Sonic Retro Member durchgeführt wurde. Der Ansprechpartner ist Ken Balough und diese Informationen sind nun bekannt:

SONIC 2 SPIN DASH AND MUSIC

Regarding the functionality of the Sonic 2 spindash, Riley said that the feature could still be removed from the final game if it is found to cause problems within the game, going on to say that developers shouldn’t talk about features so early on for this reason.

More on that point, when asked about the inclusion of the U.S. soundtrack, Riley stated that it is not currently planned for use in the full release, due to licensing issues in using Spencer Nilsen’s soundtrack. However, Sega is trying to work around that and come up with a solution. Meaning, if an agreement is reached, this may include paid DLC, if the game can support it. For now, the game is International soundtrack only.

DOING THE TIME WARP IN THE TIMELINE

When asked about the curious use of Sonic 4 assets in the reveal trailer for the game, Riley confirmed that Sega has retrofitted Sonic CD‘s place in the timeline as after Sonic 3 and Knuckles but before Sonic 4: Episode 1. The rationale behind this was that Sonic CD’s developers never put any direct mention of Sonic CD‘s place in the timeline.

Even if a slight nod to its place exists within the original game itself.

So how exactly does this work? When Sonic CD is released later this year and Sonic 4: Episode 2 is announced, there will be a trailer where Sonic escapes from his time-travelling detour. In all the Sonic 4 trailers, Sonic is chasing Eggman from the left of the screen to the right. In the Sonic CD trailer, there’s a signpost instead, and when he hits it, he takes a detour and does the story of Sonic CD. Once his CD adventure is over, his detour ends, and he goes onto Sonic 4: Episode 2, coming out sometime next year.

Wait… so Sonic 4: Episode 1 happens, Sonic CD, then Sonic 4: Episode 2? I guess this fits with the whole “after Sonic 3 and Knuckles” thing, but wouldn’t this technically make it a side-sequel to Sonic 4: Episode 1 then? Just hit me with the Hazama cameo. Blast you and your odd time travel logic, Sega!

Opinion injection aside, there’s one more point that was tackled.

SONIC 4: EPISODE 2 RUNNING ON THE RETRO ENGINE?

With The Taxman’s earlier details revealing that Sega now owns a license to his Retro Engine, used to power the popular fan game Retro Sonic Nexus, fan speculation rocketed if Sonic 4: Episode 2 will throw away the criticized physics engine it used in favor for the Retro Engine.

And with the precision of Sonic shooting down one of Eggman’s many airships, Riley responded with a flat “No,” continuing by saying that Sonic 4 “will never” use the Retro Engine because the code base is incompatible with the existing Sonic 4 engine, which they are still using for Episode 2.

Hopefully with quite a few tweaks and lessons learned from Sonic Generations. I know, opinion injection again. My apologies.

Zusammenfassung:

• Sollte die Implementierung des Sonic 2 Spin Dash irgendwelche Probleme verursachen, wird dieses Feature wieder entfernt.
• Es wird keinen US-Soundtrack geben, daher ist es dieses Mal International geregelt. Allerdings wird noch nach einer Lösung gesucht, da Spencer Nilson die Lizenz besitzt.
• Nun wurde endlich die Reihenfolge der Games geregelt: Sonic CD kommt nach Sonic & Knuckles, aber vor Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I. Vorher wurde nie eine exakte Angabe zum Geschichtsverlauf genannt.
• Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II wird nicht die Retro Engine nutzen, die für Sonic CD verwendet wird, de die Codes nicht kompatibel miteinander seien.

Kotaku hat heute ein Video veröffentlicht, welches die re-release des Games Sonic CD auf der XBox 360 demonstriert.

Was sofort ins Auge sticht, ist die High-Res Glättung. Die Änderung zwischen High-Res- und Classic-Grafik erfolgt durch den Knopfdruck des R1 oder des R2 Buttons.

Das Game wird für die XBox Live erscheinen, jedoch ist die Release noch nicht bekannt. Was wir aber wissen ist, dass das Game nach Sonic Generations und noch vor Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II erscheinen wird. Sonic CD fungiert hier als Vorgeschichte, damit man einen Zusammenhang zwischen Sonic und Metal Sonic sieht.

Auch für die Sonic CD Re-Release gibt es neue Screenshots, die auf der Produktseite von SEGA of Europe geupdatet wurden.



Nebenbei wurde von SEGA bestätigt, dass das Game auf jeden Fall Achievements enthalten wird, aber nicht nur für PSN und XBox Live Arcade. Ebenso kann man bei der PC-Version via Steam Erfolge ergattern und das Windows Phone 7 wird ebenfalls das XBox 360 Leaderboard unterstützen.

Das zweite Video solltest du lieber aus deinem Beitrag entfernen, da dieses Video nicht mehr verfügbar ist, weil der Nutzer es inzwischen entfernt hat.

Der Trailer ist vielversprechend und macht Lust auf mehr. Ich würde Sonic CD sehr gerne einmal spielen. Ich hatte bisher nämlich nie die Gelegenheit dazu.

Das verwundert mich nicht im Geringsten. Die Bewertungen unter diesem Video waren alles andere als positiv. Der Nutzer war btw. SEGA of America
Vermutlich wird ein anderer Trailer ersatzweise den Platz dafür einnehmen.

Sonic CD empfand ich damals als richtig super, auch wenn es viele Sonic Fans gibt, die das anders sehen. Obwohl ich dank Sonic the Hedgehog'06 etwas gegen diese Time Travel-Plots habe, ist das Format sehr gut gewählt und man sieht schließlich jede Stage in 3 verschiedenen Varianten.

Eine neue Information zum Spiel wurde heute auf den SEGA Blog bekannt gegeben. Sonics Companion Tails wird in Sonic CD spielbar sein. Dieser kann freigeschaltet werden, womit ihr in der Lage seid, Little Planet mit dem kleinen Fuchs retten zu können.

Außerdem ist vor ein paar Tagen ein Foto aufgetaucht, was eine weitere Plattform für dieses Spiel bestätigt hat. Dabei handelt es sich um ein GameStop Tablet, was das Spiel bereits installiert hat und ist somit eher verfügbar, als die Konsolenfassung.

Die offizielle Launch ist erst im Dezember.

Wie im letzten Beitrag erwähnt, wird Sonic CD auch auf Tablets spielbar sein und ist bereits verfügbar. Ein Video veranschaulicht das Gameplay und die Steuerung des Games:



Es sind zwar einige Slowdowns zu erkennen, aber Taxman sagte, dass das Tablet andere Programme im Hintergrund lädt. Jeder, der Sonic CD bereits gezockt hat, wird bemerkt haben, dass die Opening Animation nicht mehr eingespielt wird, wenn der Title Screen nicht in Betrieb ist. Dieser wird erst dann eingespielt, wenn man ein neues Spiel beginnt.
Außerdem wurden weitere Extras ins Spiel integriert. Die Konsolenbesitzer unter uns müssen sich leider noch etwas gedulden, bis wir uns das Game selbst zur Gemüte ziehen können.

Danke für den Hinweis auf die Playlist. Die Tracks hören sich wirklich gut an und ich werde sie mir zu Gemüte führen, sobald ich Zeit habe.

Microsoft hat diese Woche nun eine XBox Live Produktseite erstellt, was uns allerdings keine neuen Informationen zum Spiel selbst verschafft. Jedoch finden wir dort 6 neue Screenshots, als auch das XBox Live Arcade "Box Art".

Xbox360Achievements.org hat nun die Liste der XBox Live Achievements für das kommende Sonic CD veröffentlicht. Es sind 12 Erfolge an der Zahl, mit denen man insgesamt auf 200G kommt.
